Vol. 435 No. 4

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

75 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools in the country without the services of a remedial teacher.

As the Deputy will be aware, I announced earlier this year the appointment of an additional 86 remedial teachers, bringing the total number now in place to 1,033. Remedial teacher posts are allocated on the basis of priority of need and, as a result of this latest allocation of posts, 77 per cent of all primary school pupils now have access to a remedial service. Of the total of 3,209 ordinary primary schools, approximately 1,700 currently have access to the service.

I will be keeping the question of further appointments in this area under regular review as part of a broader commitment to provide a substantial number of additional remedial teachers in coming years.
