Vol. 435 No. 5

Written Answers. - Archaeological Survey of Ireland.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

58 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Finance the terms of reference of the Office of Public Works nationwide survey of the built environment; the cost of such a survey; the progress, if any, made to date; and the expected completion date of the survey.

The Archaeological Survey of Ireland covers some 150,000 archaeological sites and monuments throughout the State. The first stage of this survey — the Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) — was completed in 1992. Work is now being concentrated on the production of detailed inventories for each county.

A survey of the Architectural Heritage, involving buildings and structures dating from 1700 AD, was commenced in 1991. Work is currently being concentrated on the larger towns. Both surveys involve an ongoing progress which precludes firm completion dates and costings.
