Vol. 435 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Authorities' Arts Budgets.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

65 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Environment how the 1 per cent arts budget has been used by local authorities throughout the country; if he will have arrangements made to examine the way in which it has been implemented; and if he will make recommendations for change, if necessary.

Local authorities are allowed to include in the capital cost of certain public works projects a sum not exceeding 1 per cent of cost or £20,000, whichever is the lower, for an appropriate artistic feature in a suitable location, where it is considered that it would enhance the layout and visual impact of the project. On the basis of information supplied by local authorities, a total of 70 such features have been provided since 1986 at a total cost of just over £750,000. With regard to the future of the scheme, I refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 128 and 154 of 20 October, 1993.
