Vol. 435 No. 5

Written Answers. - Artists' Tax Allowance.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

75 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the progress, if any, he has made in his attempts to increase the number of artists who would be eligible for a tax free allowance; if he envisages a role for his Department in this; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will be aware that issues relating to taxation are the responsibility of my colleague the Minister for Finance. The issue referred to in the Deputy's question is I believe, the artists exemption relief scheme governed by section 2 of the Finance Act, 1969. As the Deputy is aware, I am examining the desirability of expanding the provisions of this scheme with a view to including "interpretative" as well as "creative" artists and I would hope to discuss the issue with the Minister for Finance in the near future.
