Vol. 435 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - Treatment of Facial Palsy.

Chris Flood

Question:

92 Mr. Flood asked the Minister for Health if facilities, including after-care facilities, exist in the Eastern Health Board area for the treatment of facial palsy.

I understand that a range of facilities for the treatment and after-care of patients suffering from facial palsy are available at a number of hospitals in the Eastern Health Board area. The type of treatment provided is dependent on the nature and origin of the patient's condition.

The facilities available include CT scanner and MRI scanning to aid diagnosis. Patients may be referred to a neurologist or neurosurgeon or, if the problem is ear related, to the Eye and Ear Hospital.

The follow-up care is decided by the consultant who recommends the appropriate treatment which can involve physiotherapy, speech therapy or cosmetic-plastic surgery. All of these services are available at hospitals in the Eastern Health Board area.
