Vol. 435 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Written Answers. - Television Reception.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

12 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the steps, if any, that can be taken to improve the television reception in the Leenane Maumeen, Maam and Cornamona areas of County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am, of course, aware of these difficulties with television reception in the areas concerned.

RTE report that they have carried out detailed reception work in the Leenane and Maam Valley areas over the last few months as it was accepted that reception in that general area was poor.

I understand that, as a first step, a low power transmitter to serve Leenane village has been in operation since early October.

RTE state that planning work is in hand to provide a transmitter to serve the Maam Valley area. While this is a very difficult area to serve with quality television reception, RTE would hope to have the proposed transmitter on air around April 1994.

As regards Cornamona, RTE say that on completion of the Maam Valley transmitter installation, when remaining coverage difficulties can be assessed, Cornamona will be treated as a matter of priority with a view to having improved service by the end of 1994.
