Written Answers. - Rehab Lottery.

Richard Bruton

Question:

145 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice whether the Rehab lottery suffers under a disadvantage by virtue of the restrictive legislation which governs its operations; and if she will consider amending that legislation so as to permit more even competition between Rehab and the national lottery.

Liz McManus

Question:

146 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice if she will increase the Rehab lottery prize celling to a realistic level, in view of the difficulties being experienced by this particular lottery; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

150 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Justice the plans, if any, she has to increase the prize fund limit for Rehab and other charities from the current £10,000 to approximately £250,000; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose for take Questions Nos. 145, 146 and 150 together.

As the Deputies will be aware, the operation of charitable lotteries was considered by a committee under the chairmanship of Mr. Justice Declan Costello which reported to the Minister for Justice in 1990. Work on the preparation of legislation based on the recommendations of that report is progressing in my Department. In the meantime, I am considering representations which I have received from a number of charitable organisations requesting an increase in the value of the prizes which may be awarded in a lottery licensed under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956.
