Vol. 435 No. 9

Written Answers. - Consultant Surgeon Appointment.

John Connor

Question:

85 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Health if he has received a request from the Western Health Board for the sanction of the appointment of a second Consultant Surgeon at Roscommon County Hospital; and if so, when he will grant permission for the appointment of this consultant Surgeon specialising in Urology.

Under my Department's current personnel policy, each agency has responsibility for identifying manpower requirements. Proposals for the filling of new and replacement permanent posts are reviewed on a monthly basis by my Department. This review is undertaken having regard to service and personnel criteria in the context of the priority afforded to each post by the agency concerned and with particular regard to the availability of financial resources.

The Western Health Board have made an informal submission to my Department for an additional consultant surgeon post with an interest in urology to be located at Roscommon County Hospital. This request forms part of the board's list of some 22 additional consultant posts which it has sought for its acute hospitals. The board has been asked to prioritise the entire list and to submit costings in respect of each post so as to enable these requests to be considered further.
