Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - Primary School Closures.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

169 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools which closed in each of the past five years; and the total financial return to the State each year on the sale or disposal of the premises concerned.

The number of national schools which closed in each of the past five years 1989-93 is as follows: 1989, 13; 1990, 12; 1991, 16; 1992, 16; 1993, 13.

Except for a small number of schools which were vested in the Minister for Finance or the Commissioners for National Education, the State has no ownership rights in national school premises other than an entitlement in certain circumstances to a refund in respect of capital grants given towards the cost of the school buildings.

The total amount of refunds of capital grants in respect of disused national schools in the years in question is not readily available. I am having the matter examined and will communicate directly with the Deputy at an early date.
