Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - Equality of Entry to Third-Level Education.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

171 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education the number and proportion of Leaving Certificate candidates from private sixth year colleages who are not in receipt of State funding in each of the years from 1991 to 1993; and whether she has studied the effect of such colleges on equality of entry to third level education.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available to my Department as private colleges are not recognised as post-primary schools and are not entitled to enter candidates for the certificate examinations. Each student who attends a private college and who wishes to enter for the Leaving Certificate examination must do so on a personal basis under the provisions for admission of external candidates. My Department does not distinguish between such candidates who attend private colleges and other external candidates.

The total number of candidates, with the number of external candidates, and the percentage this represents for each of the years 1991 to 1993, are shown as follows:

Year

Total Candidature

Externals

%

1991

61,334

5,693

9.3

1992

59,505

4,326

7.3

1993

61,562

4,333

7.0

As my Department does not keep records of candidates who attend private colleges it is not possible to say what affect these candidates have on entry to third level.
