Question:6 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if she will establish a teaching council; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Establishment of Teaching Council.
I agree in principle with the proposal to establish a Teaching Council.
A committee representative of all concerned interests was established to consider the question of the establishment of a Teaching Council with functions to include all teachers. The work of the committee was adjourned pending receipt of legal opinion on certain issues raised by the committee.
Legal advice was received recently. Further advice and clarification is, however, required and officials of my Department are in communication with our legal advisers on the matter. It is hoped to resolve the outstanding issues so that the work of the committee can recommence.
