Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - 50 Metre Swimming Pool.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

15 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the up to date position regarding the provision of a 50 metre swimming pool; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Ivor Callely

Question:

157 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education if she will give an update on the provision of an Olympic swimming pool; the proposed location; when work will commence; the timescale for completion; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 15 and 157 together.

Following a very detailed examination of the requirements for the provision of a 50 metre international swimming pool complex, which included the examination of submissions from development consortia, it has been decided, in view of the significant development costs and the projected deficit on the annual running costs, which would have to be met by the Government, not to proceed with the development of this complex.

However, I am considering the provision of a facility which would be suitable to meet both the training needs of Irish swimmers and national and limited international competition.
