Peter Barry

Question:

155 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Education the number of regional sports centres, as promised in 1987, that have been established; the location of each centre; and the cost of each centre.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 73, 88 and 155 together.

In 1988 the Government approved a multi-annual capital programme for the provision of regional and local sports centres at designated locations throughout the country within a budget of £16.910 million. A total of nine regional locations were identified for funding. A grant of £1.75 million was allocated for the provision of a regional sports centre at Cork. This project involves the provision of a 25 metre swimming pool complex with ancilliary indoor facilities. Cork Corporation is the client for the project. Following a planning process the Department, in consultation with Cork Corporation, invited proposals for the project in 1991 on the basis of a design, finance, construct and management package. The proposals received raised complex issues which required detailed consideration by my Department in consultation with Cork Corporation. No satisfactory proposals emerged from this process.

Following consultation with Cork Corporation it was agreed that the project should proceed on a traditional design and tender basis. However, in view of the lapse of time since the grant was originally allocated Cork Corporation is undertaking a reassessment of the facilities to be provided taking account of the needs of the area and the competing facilities which have been established in the intervening years.

In the light of this report the proposals already designed by Cork Corporation can, if required, be amended, following which the detailed design can be completed and tenders invited. It is expected that construction work on the project could commence in 1994.

The information requested by the Deputy in relation to the number of regional sport centres which have been established, the location and the total cost of each centre is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the official report.
