Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - Waterford Regional Sports Centre.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

75 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Education when she will make additional funding available to construct the proposed pavilion at Waterford Regional Sports Centre in view of the development undertaken by the Waterford Corporation and the fact that Waterford received a lesser allocation for its sports centre than others in the country; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Under the national lottery funded multi-annual sports capital programme, introduced by Government in 1988, Waterford was designated a regional sports centre and a grant of £0.5 million was allocated for the development of further sports facilities at Kilbarry to complement the existing facilities provided by Waterford Corporation during the eighties. The project comprised the provision of a synthetic surface on the athletic track, security fencing, new entrance, car park, athletic equipment and other ancillary works. A furher grant of £200,000 was allocated in 1991 for the provision of an athletics pavilion, including spectator accommodation and dressing rooms adjoining the athletic track.

The estimated cost of this development, based on plans prepared by Waterford Corporation, is £0.6 million and additional funds have been sought. These proposals and the request from Waterford Corporation for additional funds are under consideration by my Department. A decision in the matter will be made in the light of the funds to be provided in 1994 for the sports capital programme.
