Vol. 435 No. 10

Written Answers. - Dunboyne (Meath) Proposed Second Level School.

John Bruton

Question:

95 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the present situation regarding the negotiations with the Catholic Diocesan Authorities in regard to the related questions of the management structure for the proposed second level school in Dunboyne, County Meath, and the acquisition or otherwise by her Department of a site for the school from the Diocesan Authorities; when building work on the school in Dunboyne will commence; and the likely opening date of the school.

It has been decided to provide a new post-primary school at Dunboyne, County Meath.

The further steps necessary to progress the new school include confirmation of the site, determination of the management structure and completion of the necessary architectural planning process.

Capital funding for 1993 has been fully committed. Decisions on the 1994 capital programme must await confirmation of the Estimates for 1994. Consequently, I am not in a position to indicate at this stage when work on the new school will commence or the likely opening date.

As I have already indicated in reply to previous questions, the management structure has to be considered in the context of the White Paper on Education. No final decision has yet been taken on the management structure. A proposal from the Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Meath that the new school be a coeducational diocesan secondary school on a site owned by the diocesan authorities is under consideration.
