Vol. 435 No. 11

Written Answers. - EC Directive on Paternity Leave.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

79 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform if the proposed EU directive on paternity leave will be approved by the EU Council of Ministers in the coming weeks; and if, in view of the Irish Government's support for the measure, he will give the steps, if any, he is taking to have the directive implemented in Ireland once it becomes EU Law.

The proposed Directive on parental leave is on the agenda of the forthcoming Council of Ministers of Labour and Social Affairs on 23 November 1993. As the proposal is due for discussion on that date it is not possible to say that it will be approved.

The question of determining how such a proposal would be implemented in Ireland will be considered once the proposed Directive has been adopted and the specifics of the commitments involved are clear.
