Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ballintubber Castle, County Roscommon.

John Connor

Question:

56 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, that are in train to commence restoration work on Ballintubber Castle, County Roscommon; his views on whether this site, the largest Norman style stone castle in Ireland, is a significant national monument; and whether a restoration programme on it is urgent.

Ballintubber Castle is indeed a significant national monument, dating from around 1300 AD. The castle is not in State care and consequently the Commissioners of Public Works would not be empowered to carry out any works there.
