Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

John Bruton

Question:

73 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Finance the extent to which he has responsibility for engineering works on rivers which are necessary to relieve flooding of houses.

The 1945 Arterial Drainage Act confers powers on the Office of Public Works to undertake drainage engineering works to relieve flooding over the entire river catchment area. It does not allow the Minister to undertake works to relieve flooding of specific houses.

The Deputy may have in mind the Local Works Act 1949 which applies to Local Authorities.
