Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bundoran (Donegal) Garda Strength.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

102 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Justice if there are any plans to increase the number of gardaí in Bundoran, County Donegal, during the tourist season, and also to restore the full 24 hour service to Bundoran Garda Barracks.

The allocation of Garda manpower to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities, who decide this having regard to their ongoing assessment of the policing requirements of those areas. They inform me that the current strength of Bundoran Garda station is 15 gardaí.

Since 1988, the daily opening hours at Bundoran Garda station have been from 10 a.m. — 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. — 6 p.m. However, foot and mobile patrols are carried out by the gardaí in Bundoran on a 24-hour basis.

During the tourist season, the tours of duty are rearranged so as to provide additional patrols during the hours of greatest need — 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. The gardaí at Ballyshannon assist in policing the Bundoran area during the season. This ensures a more visible police presence during those periods when there is a likelihood of incidents of disorder or vandalism taking place especially late at night or in the early hours of the morning.

The local gardaí meet with the business community at the beginning of each tourist season and they have been generally satisfied with the policing arrangements for the area so far.
The Garda authorities have no plans to open Bundoran Garda station on a 24-hour basis or to assign any additional gardaí to Bundoran, but they are keeping the situation under continuing review.
