Vol. 436 No. 1

Written Answers. - Fuel Allowance Eligibility.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

105 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment if persons on a FÁS scheme being paid by his Department are eligible for free fuel allowance; and whether there are any instances where a person would be allowed this allowance.

Participants on FÁS training courses who would have qualified for a fuel allowance had they remained on the live register are eligible to receive a fuel allowance from FÁS. Participants on the social employment scheme are paid allowances which are in excess of their social welfare entitlements and the differential is intended to compensate them for the loss of secondary social welfare benefits such as the fuel allowance.

In the case of the Community Employment Development Programme which operates in the 12 partnership areas designated under the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, participants who would have been entitled to a fuel allowance had they remained on the live register are paid a fuel allowance by the Department of Social Welfare.
