Martin Cullen

Question:

38 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will make a statement on the amount of money paid to each of the eight regional health boards by way of administration costs for the supplementary welfare scheme for each of the years from 1990 to 1992.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 10, 31 and 38 together.

Expenditure on the supplementary welfare allowance scheme including administration costs was £57.9 million in 1990, £74.3 million in 1991 and £101.1 million in 1992.

The cost of administering the scheme in 1990, 1991 and 1992 was £9 million, £12.4 million and £11.5 million respectively. The 1991 figure is inflated by some £1.4 million on foot of a retrospective pay award which was paid in 1991 but which related to previous years.

The breakdown of administration costs on a health board basis for the years 1990, 1991, 1992 is set out in the following tabular statement.
