Vol. 436 No. 2

Written Answers. - Measures to Combat Poverty.

Michael Creed

Question:

46 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Social Welfare the measures, if any, he proposes to combat poverty in negotiating a new Programme for Economic and Social Progress agreement.

I will be taking account of the needs of social welfare recipients and the views of representative organisations in formulating an approach to any new agreement. Considerable progress was made over the term of the existing agreement in improving the position of people on social welfare and addressing the problem of poverty and I would expect that this approach would be confirmed in the context of any further programme. The specific measures to be included in any programme would be a matter for discussion at the appropriate time.
