Vol. 436 No. 2

Written Answers. - Surveillance Camera Installation.

Edward Nealon

Question:

83 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the success being experienced in Newcastle-on-Tyne in the fight against crime through the installation of surveillance cameras by the police in city centre areas; if this particular system of camera surveillance has been studied by the Garda authorities; and if there are any plans for the installation of a similar camera complex under Garda control in Dublin city centre and other areas.

I am aware of the success being experienced in Newcastle-on-Tyne and in other cities by the installation of surveillance cameras by police forces in city centre areas as an aid in the fight against crime. The Garda have visited a number of cities to view the particular systems in use and recognise the possible benefits of the system as an aid to policing. This matter is the subject of ongoing research and attention.
