Vol. 436 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drink Driving Prosecutions.

Tony Gregory

Question:

85 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the number of drink-driving prosecutions which were due for court appearance in the Dublin area during the period September to October 1993; and the number of these which did not proceed due to the non-appearance of the prosecuting Garda.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that 239 drink driving prosecutions were listed for court hearing in the Dublin Metropolitan Area during the period in question. Two of these cases did not proceed as a result of the non-appearance of the prosecuting garda. In one case, the prosecuting garda had resigned from the Force prior to the date of the court hearing and, in the second case, the presiding Judge refused to grant an adjournment requested by another garda on behalf of the prosecuting garda who was unable to attend court on the date in question.

Ivor Callely

Question:

87 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the total number of State, semi-State agencies and all other authorities that have a function in job creation; the responsibility of each agency and its budget allocation; the annual pay and non-pay cost of each agency; and the rationalisation proposals, if any, in this area.

The information requested by the Deputy is largely contained in the appendices to the document "Employment through Enterprise"— the response of the Government to the Moriarty Task Force on the Implementation of the Culliton report.

Leader companies, Area Partnership Companies and County Enterprise Boards also have a role.

As the Deputy will be aware, legislation has been passed by the Oireachtas to establish under the aegis of Forfás two separate and autonomous agencies — Forbairt, which will be empowered to support the development of indigenous industry, and IDA Ireland which will be empowered to attract internationally mobile investment to Ireland.

I am confident that these agencies will be operational by 1 January, 1994.
