Peadar Clohessy

Question:

25 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Justice the number of complaints made to the Garda Complaints Board in each year since it was established; the number of complaints that were upheld; the disciplinary measures that were taken as a result; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Jim Higgins

Question:

85 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice the number of complaints which have been made to the Garda Complaints Board since its inception; the number of complaints into which investigations have been completed; the number of complaints against members of the Garda Síochána which have been upheld; the number of staff and the number of hours worked in the course of the investigation and determination of such complaints; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 9, 25 and 85. together.

The information sought in relation to the complaints dealt with, the disciplinary measure and the staffing of the board is published in the Garda Complaints Board's annual reports, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The 1993 figures will not be available until the annual report for that year is published in 1994.

The staff complement of the board at present is 11. This, however, does not represent the actual number of staff involved and of hours worked in the course of the investigation and determination of complaints because the Garda time involved in such investigations is not included. Details of the Garda time involved is not readily available and could be obtained only by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of resources.
