Vol. 436 No. 3

Written Answers. - Scotstown (Monaghan) Garda Station.

Seymour Crawford

Question:

41 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Justice if she will provide for the building of a new Garda Station in Scotstown, County Monaghan in the 1994 Estimate; the progress, if any, that has been made on the preparation of the site; if the minor but necessary repairs will be carried out to the existing station as promised by her on 6 April 1993; and if so, when.

I stated on 6 April 1993 that certain improvement works would be carried out to this station before the end of the year. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that these works are presently being carried out and should be completed within the next two weeks. These include painting and decorating of the station internally; upgrading of the toilet facilities; installation of a shower unit; upgrading of kitchen facilities and replacement of kitchen units.

As regards the long term situation, the Office of Public Works has been asked to investigate the possibility of purchasing the existing Garda station building. If it is successful it is envisaged that a small extension will be built and any additional repairs necessary will be carried out to the existing building.

The timescale of this project is dependent on whether this option is pursued or if it is decided to build a new station on the site purchased. However, in any event money will not be spent on this project in 1994. The Deputy can be assured that the project is being advanced as quickly as possible and that there will be no avoidable delay.
