Question:

226 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education whether a home economics project will be included in the 1994 junior certificate examinations; the anticipated duration of such a project; the person who will assess such a project; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

233 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the way in which wood technology and home economics are to be examined at junior certificate level in 1994.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 225, 226 and 233 together. In regard to home economics the introduction of a practical test, incorporating project work, for all home economics students at junior certificate level is under consideration in my Department at present. I hope to be in a position to advise schools about the matter shortly.

In the case of materials technology (wood) it is intended that the practical component of the course will be tested by means of a project which will be completed as part of course work commencing in early 1994. The detailed arrangements will shortly be notified to schools.
