Vol. 436 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin Port Development.

Ivor Callely

Question:

48 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine the funding, if any, that is available to improve Dublin Port facilities; if the Port and Docks Board has made submissions on future developments to ensure Dublin Port remains Dublin's premier port; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Port development proposals at a total estimated cost of £68 million have been submitted by Dublin Port and Docks Board for consideration for EC aid. Two of the projects proposed, one roll-on/roll-off project and one lift-on/lift-off project, have already been forwarded to the European Union by the Department for consideration for aid from the Cohesion Fund. Decision on these are expected in the near future.

The other proposals submitted by the board are under consideration in the context of the utilisation of the next round of Structural Funds. As the Deputy will be aware a comprehensive port development programme, involving expenditure of £100 million over the years 1994 to 1999, is included in the National Development Plan. Dublin Port projects which are shown to be justified will be strongly supported by the Department for Structural Fund aid.
