Written Answers. - Primary Teaching Posts.

Question:

242 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Education if, in regard to the 200 posts which she stated she was retaining in primary teaching in 1993, she will give a detailed breakdown of the way in which these 200 posts have been filled; and if all 200 have now been retained and filled.

The posts in question were retained in the system to facilitate the provision of a range of additional teaching supports to special needs children.

As part of this arrangement, the following special additional supports have already been put in place:

—86 additional remedial teachers;

—68 additional concessionary posts to schools in disadvantaged areas;

—15 additional Home-School-Liaison co-ordinators;

—5 additional resource teachers, and

—10 posts allocated to address individual special needs situations.

In addition, arrangements are being finalised for the appointment of an additional three visiting teachers for traveller children.

The remaining posts will shortly be allocated as part of the development of pre-school projects targeted as part of the development of pre-school projects targeted on disadvantaged areas.
