Vol. 436 No. 8

Written Answers. - Penetration of Asian-Pacific Markets.

Seán Barrett

Question:

12 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the measures, if any, he has put in place to help Irish exporters penetrate the Asia/Pacific markets; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Asia-Pacific region is experiencing phenomenal growth rates at present. The Chinese economy grew by 12.8 per cent in 1992. The countries of South-East Asia are recording an average annual growth rate of around 7 per cent. While many of these countries are becoming major exporters of merchandise goods, their rate of growth and economic development make them significant importers of internationally traded services.

As Irish exporters were showing an increasing interest in these markets I asked An Bord Tráchtála to review its representation in the region. As a result of the review ABT is increasing its presence in the Chinese market and it will shortly open a new office in Malaysia. At present ABT has offices in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and is represented by trade consultants in a number of other countries.
As the Deputy will be aware, I led a number of trade missions to the region already this year. In April I led an aviation sector trade mission to China and Hong Kong. In May I accompanied the Taoiseach on a trade mission to Malaysia and in November I led a trade mission to Japan and Korea. While in Korea I signed an agreement on economic co-operation which, I hope, will lead to increased economic and trading contacts.
