Vol. 436 No. 8

Written Answers. - Tourism Research.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

45 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade the amount of resources that his Department devoted to research in the year 1993 for the tourism industry; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department carries out research into various aspects of the Irish tourism industry using its in-house resources as required. In addition an extensive body of research is available to my Department from other domestic and international sources including material issued by the industry itself and international organisations such as the European Union and the OECD.

Furthermore, during 1993, outside consultants were commissioned to undertake two specific studies into certain aspects of the Irish tourism industry, one on the Irish Hotel industry and the other on marketing expenditure under the operational programme for tourism (1989-1993).
