I believe it is entirely appropriate on the approaching anniversary of these terrible events to remember those who lost their lives or were injured, directly or indirectly. A number of families in our community had their lives blighted by these atrocities. Their loss must figure largely in our consideration at anniversary time or when other similar attacks occur.
With the deepest respect for those who reflect on their lost family members, I would be concerned never to give an impression that any among the thousands of lives lost was more particularly regretted by the Government. Every death through violence on this island or from circumstances relating to this island, is as deserving of our notice and regret — just as every murderous assault deserves our condemnation regardless of place or victims.
The most effective contribution I can make to the memory of the Dublin and Monaghan bomb victims is to strive to bring about peace and reconciliation between the two traditions on this island in a way that is recognised as equitable and fair.
