Written Answers. - Garda Man/Womanpower.

Question:

282 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for Justice the man and womanpower levels as of January 1994 in Coolock, Raheny and Howth Garda Stations; and the amount of the extra resources and personnel, announced by her for the gardaí before Christmas, that will be allocated to these stations in 1994.

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda man/womanpower and other resources to individual areas. The strength at each of the stations referred to in the question is outlined in the following table:

The comprehensive package of measures which I announced on 14 December last to tackle crime includes, amongst other things, the recruitment of over 400 gardaí this year and the further recruitment of over 1,000 gardaí between 1995 and 1997. In addition, 50 clerical civilians will be recruited during 1994 to release gardaí employed on administrative work for outdoor duties on a "one-to-one" basis.

The levels of man/womanpower and other resources at Coolock, Howth and Raheny stations and, indeed, all Garda stations are kept under continuing review by the Garda authorities. As additional resources become available, the Garda authorities allocate them, having regard to the overall demands on the Force at that time. It is not possible at this stage to say specifically what additional resources may be allocated to the stations mentioned by the Deputy in 1994.
