Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - Irish Showman's Guild Submission.

Tony Gregory

Question:

576 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education her response to the submission made to her Department by the Irish Showman's Guild; the initiatives, if any, she is considering taking to assist with the education of Irish show and circus children; if she will meet, at an early date, with representatives of the Irish Showman's Guild in this regard.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the Survey on the number, age-range and geographical distribution of children of Show and Circus families in the Republic of Ireland which was conducted for the Irish Showman's Guild in Summer 1992.

My predecessor, Mary O'Rourke T.D., met with representatives of the Irish Showman's Guild on 20 June 1991. At that meeting it was proposed that a survey should be conducted and that the Irish Showman's Guild would submit a draft of concrete and workable proposal to the Department.

I would be happy to have discussions with the Irish Showman's Guild following receipt of their proposals in the matter.
