Vol. 437 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

626 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education if she will reinstate the transport service for children from the Aughrim/Glenalappa area of Moyvane, County Kerry, who are attending Murhur national school; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In order to establish or retain a school transport service, there must be a sufficient number of children in a distinct locality to ensure that the average daily number of children eligible for free transport being conveyed each school term would not be less than ten. In this context, eligible children means children between 4 and 10 years of age who live not less than two miles from their nearest school, and, if over 10 years, not less than three miles.

While the number of eligible children offering for transport in the case to which the Deputy refers is no longer sufficient to warrant maintenance of the service, I am prepared, in the circumstances of the case, to have the service re-instated until the end of the current school term.
