Vol. 438 No. 3

Written Answers. - Appointment of District Court Judge.

Austin Deasy

Question:

61 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice if she has satisfied herself that the present system of appointment of District Court judges is adequate; and the plans, if any she has to review the system as there is concern amongst the public and legal profession at inconsistencies in some specific cases.

District Court judges are appointed by the President on the advice of the Government. The formal qualification required for appointment as a District Court judge is not less than ten years practice as a barrister or solicitor.

I am satisfied that the present system of appointment is adequate and I have no proposals at present for a review of the system.
