Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Interdepartmental Islands Committee.

Séamus Hughes

Question:

156 Mr. Hughes asked the Minister for the Marine when the interdepartmental islands committee will report to him; if he will give details of its terms of reference and the Departments represented on the committee; and whether the island of Achill, County Mayo, is included for the purposes of the study.

I understand that the interdepartmental islands committee is currently preparing an interim report, which will be available this spring.

The committee has the following terms of reference: "To review and priorities development strategies and recommend on actions to ensure a co-ordinated approach to all aspects of island development, including the question of structural relationships".

The following Government Departments are represented on the committee:

Agriculture, Food and Forestry;

Equality and Law Reform;

Defence;

Finance;

Ealaíon, Cultúir agus Gaeltachta;

Health; Marine (Chair);

Education;

Social Welfare;

Enterprise and Employment;

Tourism and Trade;

Environment;

Transport, Energy, Communications.

The island of Achill, County Mayo, whilst connected to the mainland by a land bridge, will be examined in the context of all aspects of island development by the interim report.
