Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Electricity Transmission.

Peter Barry

Question:

261 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if the substantial investment envisaged in the National Development Plan, 1994-99, to upgrade the ESB's transmission and distribution network calls for the extensive use of underground cabling throughout the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The National Development Plan envisages substantial investment over the period of the plan in the electricity transmission and distribution networks to cater for the significantly increased demand which is forecast for the period of the plan. I have no function in relation to determining whether underground cabling will be used. This is a matter for decision by the ESB in consultation with the appropriate planning authorities. However, I am advised that underground cabling is a very costly option for transmitting electricity over distances and is only considered to be a viable option in high density urban areas.
