Question:

312 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Education the number of those students who secured A grades in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian in the 1993 leaving certificate who also took Irish as a subject; and if she will give a breakdown of their leaving certificate results in Irish.

The number of candidates who obtained grade A at higher level in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian in the 1993 leaving certificate examination and who also sat for Irish is set out as follows:

313 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Education the number of A grades altogether that were secured, on average, by those students who secured an A grade in Irish in the 1993 leaving certificate examination; and the way in which this compares with the average for students who secured A grades in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian excluding those students who secured an A grade in Irish.

Candidates who obtained grade A in higher level Irish in the 1993 leaving certificate examinations secured, on average, 3.4 higher level grade As.

The comparable average of candidates, other than those who secured a grade A in higher level Irish, who secured grade A in higher level in one of the subjects English, French, German, Spanish or Italian, was as follows: English, 2.1; French, 2.3; German, 2.6; Spanish, 1.8; Italian, 2.5.
