Vol. 438 No. 4

Written Answers. - Irish-American Retirement Market.

Brendan McGahon

Question:

24 Mr. McGahon asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on the potential of the Irish-American retirement market; and if he will make a direct proposal to actively encourage and promote the development of this market to generate increased capital and income flows to the Republic of Ireland.

I do not have any specific proposals to actively encourage the generation of increased capital and income flows to this country from the Irish-American retirement market. However, the American Ireland Fund actively encourages Irish Americans of whatever age to make donations which are then invested in development projects in Ireland.

I understand that since the fund was first established in 1987, about 2,000 projects have received grants.
