Vol. 438 No. 5

Written Answers. - Report on Women Academics in Third Level Education.

Ivor Callely

Question:

196 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education her views on the recommendations in the 1987 report of the committee on the position of women academics in third level education; and the measures, if any, she has taken to have these recommendations implemented.

The recommendations in the report referred to by the Deputy were aimed at identifying measures to redress the imbalance in relation to the position of women academics and were intended for implementation by the higher education institutions.

The report was published by the Higher Education Authority and since its publication the Higher Education Authority, in conjuction with UCC, has established a National Centre for Equality in Higher Education at UCC. This centre is concerned with promoting equality in higher education.

Some progress has been made in this area but much remains to be done as indicated in the Green Paper "Education for a Changing World" and in the report on the National Education Convention. The concerns expressed will be considered further in the context of the forthcoming White Paper.
