Vol. 438 No. 5

Written Answers. - Social Housing.

John Bruton

Question:

69 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment if he has carried out any assessment of the effectiveness of the 1991 Government Plan for Social Housing; if the take-up of the various schemes offered under this plan have been up to expectations; if not, the reason therefor; and the changes, if any, he proposes to make in the scheme to allow for a better rate of take-up.

I am generally satisfied with the take-up of the measures introduced under A Plan for Social Housing. These measures have made a substantial contribution to social housing output in 1993 and a still greater contribution can be expected this year in view of the increased resources provided for them. As envisaged when the plan was published, the various measures are currently under review in my Department with a view to increasing their effectiveness, facilitating their implementation by housing authorities and realising their full potential to meet social housing needs. Pending completion of the review and decisions arising from it, I do not propose to comment on the possible outcome.
