Vol. 438 No. 5

Written Answers. - Funding for Travelling Community Organisations.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

141 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if he will increase financial assistance to organisations representing the travelling community to help the development of their recycling activities which provide up to 400 jobs in the settled community and are valued at £7.5 million.

Wexford): I am fully aware of the traditional involvement of the travelling community in materials recovery and recycling. In recent years, my Department has given grant assistance to three projects developed by travellers' groups. Such groups were among those invited to, and represented at, the national recycling conference organised by my Department in December 1993. I will have regard to the views expressed by these, and other conference participants, in the preparation of a national recycling strategy which is now at an advanced stage.
