Vol. 438 No. 5

Written Answers. - Conservation Area Legislation.

Richard Bruton

Question:

148 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment whether he has considered the introduction of conservation area legislation along the lines of that available in the UK which goes beyond the practice in Irish legislation of listing individual buildings and provides for the planning of the conservation of whole areas which have historical and architectural significance; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Programme for a Partnership Government contains an undertaking to reinforce the existing framework for safeguarding the built heritage by enhancing the protection for listed buildings. Measures to give effect to this commitment are being considered and will be announced in due course.
