Seán Barrett

Question:

82 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for the Marine if a decision has been taken on the appointment of a Chief Executive to the Marine Institute.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 58 and 82 together.

I am pleased to inform Deputies that I approved, last November, the decision of the Board of the Marine Institute to appoint Dr. Peter Heffernan as Chief Executive.

Dr. Heffernan is a graduate of University College Galway and a marine scientist of international reputation. A former Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, he was Manager of the Martin Ryan Marine Science Institute at University College Galway prior to taking up his present position.

I am sure the Deputies will join me in wishing Dr. Heffernan every success in his new and challenging brief.
