Vol. 438 No. 7

Written Answers. - Growth Promoters.

Robert Molloy

Question:

9 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he has satisfied himself that the Animal Remedies Act, 1993, and regulations made thereunder are adequate to control the use of all growth promoters, including liquid growth promoters; the number of prosecutions to date under this Act; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Animal Remedies Act, 1993, came into force on 1 October 1993 and I am satisfied that it is adequate to control the use of all growth promoters. The legislative framework provided in the Act is flexible and allows for the control of newly developed products.

There are 12 cases involving alleged breaches of the Act currently under investigation. Where the evidence warrants it, prosecutions will be initiated. As the Deputy will appreciate, investigations into illegal use of growth promoters are complex and time consuming.
