Vol. 439 No. 1

Written Answers. - Energy Efficient Electrical Appliances.

Jim Higgins

Question:

18 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if it is proposed to introduce legislation governing the need for energy efficient electrical appliances; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Regulations, required on foot of EU Directives, are currently in preparation in relation to efficiency requirements for new hot water boilers fired with liquid or gaseous fuels.

Preparation of further Regulations relating to the energy labelling of certain household appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers and ovens will commence in due course as the implementing Directives covering these appliances are finalised under the EU Framework Directive.

I should point out that, in relation to this and other energy conservation issues, our first approach will be to encourage the introduction of best practice technologies in all sectors on a voluntary basis. The possibility of introducing legislative measures will be considered where promotion and encouragement are found not to be successful.
