Vol. 439 No. 4

Written Answers. - Abortion Legislation.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

16 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Health when he will bring forward legislation to deal with the abortion issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As stated in the Programme for Partnership Government, the Government intends to introduce legislation to regulate the position arising from the Supreme Court decision in the "X" case. The programme states that the legislation will recognise the sensitivity of the issue throughout the community.

I have stated on previous occasions that I consider the issue to be a very complex one with constitutional, legal and medical aspects to be considered. Before finalising my proposals I will engage in widespread consultation in order to take account of the genuine concerns of the medical profession and of the community in general.
