Vol. 439 No. 4

Written Answers. - HIV Prevention Information.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

28 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Health the action, if any, he intends to take in relation to the refusal by the Mater Hospital to distribute HIV prevention information in the designated AIDS unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Mater Hospital is distributing leaflets and displaying posters in the out-patients infectious diseases unit, where most people with suspected HIV infection first attend the hospital for diagnosis and treatment. The information provided includes material produced by my Department. It is also providing a full counselling service on a one-to-one basis to inpatients in the unit.

In the circumstances, I do not consider that there is any need for me to communicate with the hospital regarding this matter at this stage.
