Vol. 439 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Discharges.

Austin Deasy

Question:

82 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Health if he has satisfied himself that certain health boards are not sending patients home from hospitals at weekends for economic reasons and contrary to the best medical advice available; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The health boards have advised me that patients are discharged from hospital by the consultants concerned when medical opinion deems it appropriate. I would not condone any policy where patients were discharged from hospital for purely economic reasons. However, if the Deputy has a specific case in mind, I will investigate same.
